Description
Two aircraft (yours and your opponent’s) fly over a canyon filled with layers of colorful bricks, a la Breakout. Using the fire button on your paddle controller, you earn points by dropping bombs into the canyon and destroying as many blocks as possible. The player with the highest score at the end of the game wins.
This game is extremely limited in that it is played using only the paddle controller’s fire button. You do not control the movement of the planes and helicopters, but rather you must time your shots to do the most damage.
The cartridge includes a secondary variation titled “Sea Bomber” that is a little more interactive. In this game, you deploy bombs onto seafaring ships, but this time you can use the paddle controller’s knob to determine the depth of the bombs.
The game can be played one on one against the AI or against a second player. The game also got a color home port on the Atari 2600/VCS
Canyon Bomber
Overview & History
Released by Atari in 1978, Canyon Bomber stands as a quintessential artifact of the golden age of arcade gaming, designed by Larry Emmons and Steve Bristow. Set against the stark, monochrome vector-style backdrops of early CRT monitors—later colorized with simple overlays—the game strips competitive action down to its rawest mathematical form. Unlike the space invaders and maze runners dominating late-70s arcades, Canyon Bomber presents players with a serene yet cutthroat valley filled with stacked numerical masonry. There is no traditional storyline or heroic avatar; instead, you command an escalating aerial assault, piloting a biplane or a hot-air balloon across a widening chasm. Its minimalist aesthetic and immediate pick-up-and-play loop made it an arcade cabinet staple for head-to-head multiplayer bouts, where the goal wasn't just survival, but absolute structural annihilation of the canyon floor before time expired.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Canyon Bomber offers two distinct modes: 'One Plane' and 'Two Plane' (or balloon variants), each altering the pacing of the destruction. Players control a continuously moving aircraft that glides horizontally back and forth across the top of the screen, descending slightly with each pass. The core mechanic revolves around dropping bombs downward into a canyon packed with numbered blocks. Each block requires a specific number of direct hits to be completely pulverized, or players can target the foundational 'base' blocks to trigger a cascading avalanche that clears entire columns instantly. As the game progresses, the plane flies faster and drops lower, introducing a breathless tension of calculating drop-timing against impending wall collisions. If playing in the competitive two-player mode, rivals alternate turns to see who can score the highest demolition yield, turning a simple physics puzzle into a high-stakes tactical showdown.
Keyboard Controls
- Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Steer or adjust aircraft trajectory (depending on cabinet emulation variants)
- Action Keys: Drop bomb / Release payload
- Enter: Insert coin / Start game / Pause
