Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness

Overview & History

Originally released in arcades by Capcom in 1995 on the CP System II hardware, Cyberbots: Fullmetal Madness is a sprawling, mecha-centric spinoff of the Armored Warriors beat-'em-up universe. Set in a 21st-century Earth ravaged by corporate greed and intergalactic conflict, the narrative follows Earth's military forces and rogue pilots piloting massive customizable bipedal weapons known as Variant Armors (VAs) to stop a rogue artificial intelligence and a military coup led by the Earth Government Forces. Directed by Shinji Mikami, the game was later ported to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, but the arcade original remains the definitive showcase of its striking, hand-drawn 2D sprites, massive multi-tiered mecha designs, and distinct industrial aesthetic.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard fighting games, Cyberbots pairs human pilots with interchangeable mechanical chassis. Players select a pilot—each possessing their own backstory and hidden motivations, such as the ace pilot Jin Saotome or the vengeful reploid Shade—and then pair them with one of four distinct Variant Armors: Blodia (heavy bipedal brawler), Gawain (agile sword-wielder), Reptos (dino-inspired speedster), or Helion (aerial striker). Combat revolves around a unique six-button layout, featuring light, medium, and heavy attacks mapped to both arms and boosters. Players can execute devastating vector dashes, block mid-air, and unleash flashy 'Weapon Gauge' specials. Furthermore, by inputting specific motions, mechs can detach their limbs to launch projectile fists or trigger cinematic 'Hyper Combos' that fill the screen with explosive pixel art pyrotechnics.
