Dimahoo

Overview & History

Released by Raizing and Eighting in 2000, Dimahoo (known in Japan as Great Mahou Daisakusen) is a vertical-scrolling manic shoot 'em up and the chronological third entry in the developer's magical-punk fantasy trilogy. Set in a dieselpunk-meets-arcane world, the storyline follows a diverse crew of pilots—including the young sorcerer Grabia, the gun-toting fairy Palm, and the armored knight Born—as they battle the corrupt military forces of the Empire. Unlike its predecessor Kingdom Grandmaster, this title leaned heavily into dense bullet-hell patterns while introducing an intricate item-collection meta-game centered around uncovering hidden treasures through chained destruction.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

At its core, Dimahoo utilizes a standard two-button layout (Shot and Bomb) alongside a unique item-grading mechanic. Destroying enemies with regular shots yields basic medals, but continuously destroying targets without dying builds a "Level" meter, which upgrades dropped items from copper to silver, gold, and eventually rare magical artifacts. These items not only boost the player's score exponentially but also unlock powerful upgrades and extensions. Each character features distinct weaponry—Grabia relies on sweeping magical arcs, while Palm utilizes focused, rapid-fire projectiles—complemented by a devastating screen-clearing bomb that grants temporary invulnerability against dense bullet patterns.
