Description

In 1983 Bally midway released the follow up to the original Tron game titled Discs of Tron. In Discs of Tron the game recreates the disc fighting sequence of the movie where you progress through different platforms in a disc battle against the evil enemy Sark. Discs of Tron

Overview & History

Released by Bally Midway in 1983 as a direct follow-up to their massive hit *Tron*, *Discs of Tron* was designed by Rocky Bolhke and inspired by the iconic disc-war sequence from the 1982 Disney film. Unlike its predecessor which combined multiple minigames, this sequel focused exclusively on the lethal sport of disc battles. Operating on specialized hardware, the cabinet was notable for offering both upright and environmental sit-down configurations, immersing players in the glowing, grid-based aesthetic of the MCP’s digital realm. The arcade experience was famously challenging, driven by an escalating difficulty curve that tasked players with defeating the ultimate digital adversary, the villainous Sark, across multi-tiered neon platforms.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective is to eliminate the program Sark by hurling glowing identity discs while dodging his returning projectiles. The action takes place on a unique concentric, circular playfield featuring a lower and upper tier linked by an elevator platform. Players must constantly reposition their avatar, Tron, to avoid falling into the deadly data-pit below or getting trapped by destructive energy walls. Defensive tactics are just as crucial as offense: players can catch incoming enemy discs to neutralize them, hide behind movable, glowing deflector blocks that degrade with each impact, or unleash a devastating 'Super Disc' attack to clear obstacles. As rounds progress, environmental hazards increase, forcing precise spatial awareness, lightning-fast reflexes, and tactical exploitation of the arena's verticality.
