Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1989 for the CP System (CPS-1) arcade hardware, Dynasty Wars (known as Tenchi o Kurau in Japan) is a historical beat-em-up loosely based on the classic Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Designed by Yoshiki Okamoto, this pioneering title predated Capcom's iconic Warriors of Fate and served as an early blueprint for the massive scrolling brawler genre. Set during the turbulent decline of the Han Dynasty, players step into the boots of legendary warlords to overthrow the tyrannical Prime Minister Dong Zhuo and rescue the abducted Emperor.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard ground-pounding brawlers, Dynasty Wars introduces a distinct mounted-combat system. Players choose from four historical generals—Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun—each possessing unique attributes in speed, weapon reach, and special magic attacks. As you ride across horizontally scrolling battlefields swarming with rival infantry and archers, you must manage both horse stamina and weapon arcs. The horse allows for swift charges, trampling enemies beneath hooves, but also makes you a larger target. Dismounting is possible to raid enemy encampments or find power-ups like roasted meat and tactical scrolls, though you are severely vulnerable on foot. Boss battles pit you against towering historical figures who require calculated strikes, dodging, and heavy use of magic scrolls to defeat before the stage timer expires.
