Iron Horse

Iron Horse

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1986, Iron Horse (also known in Japan as *Dai Gyakusyu*) is a gritty side-scrolling action arcade game set in the American Wild West. Unlike standard platformers of the era, the game places players in the boots of a rugged train robber during the late 19th century. The overarching storyline casts you as an outlaw infiltrating the heavily guarded "Iron Horse" steam train to plunder its riches carriage by carriage, culminating in a daring confrontation against rival gang members and armed guards.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning six distinct stages, gameplay requires players to constantly advance horizontally across the top and interior of the moving train. Unlike traditional beat-'em-ups, vertical depth is introduced, allowing characters to duck into boxcars, scale ladders, and leap between adjacent train cars to dodge steam vents, thrown dynamite, and gunfire. The protagonist is equipped with a versatile whip-like weapon and a trusty six-shooter for ranged threats. Enemies range from knife-throwing bandits and vicious guard dogs to acrobatic ruffians dropping down from overhead cranes. Collecting scattered loot bags increases your score, while hidden power-ups grant temporary speed boosts or enhanced firepower. The fast-paced cadence demands precise timing, especially when traversing gaps between cars or fighting intense bosses at the end of each stage.
