Description

Karate Champ is an action fighting game for one or two players.

In one player version the player has to master some skills at a karate school to be able to compete in a karate tournament for the national title. At the end of each match is a bonus round where the winner can earn extra points by knocking down flying objects that are tossed his way, breaking roof tiles/ice blocks or knocking down a charging bull on the beach!

In Player vs Player (two player) version, players compete against each other at twelve different locations to see who has the best karate skills! To win a match, the player must win two of three rounds by knocking down his opponent with a wide variety of karate moves. A full point or half a point is awarded for knocking the opponent down and the first player to gain a two point lead wins the round. When the 30 seconds time limit for a round ends, the player who has the most points wins. At the end of each match is a bonus round where the winner can earn extra points by knocking down flying objects that are tossed his way, breaking boards or knocking down charging bulls!

Karate Champ

Overview & History

Released by TechnuS Japan and Data East in 1984, Karate Champ is a seminal arcade milestone that single-handedly established the one-on-one fighting game genre. Unlike traditional platformers of its era, this title ditched health bars in favor of a unique scoring system derived from authentic martial arts point-sparring rules. Set against the serene backdrop of traditional Japanese dojos and outdoor tournament grounds, players guide an aspiring martial artist through a relentless gauntlet of opponents—and occasionally wild animals like tigers and bulls—to win the heart of the princess. Its innovative directional input system laid the structural groundwork for virtually every competitive fighting game that followed throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Karate Champ eschews standard buttons for attack types; instead, the game introduces a revolutionary dual-joystick control scheme where every combination of the twin joysticks dictates a specific offensive or defensive maneuver. Players can execute up to twenty-one distinct moves, ranging from high and low roundhouse kicks, sweeping leg strikes, and lunging backfists, to diving headbutts and agile aerial maneuvers. Matches are decided by judges awarding a 'Full Point' (Ipon) or a 'Half Point' (Waza-ari) based on the precision and timing of your strike. The first competitor to secure two full points wins the round, forcing players to master distance management, spacing, and split-second counterattacks rather than mindless button-mashing.
