Description

The arcade follow-up to Yie Ar Kung Fu switches from the one-on-one style into a platform beat ’em up design.

You play Lee, who has become trapped in the Temple by the Triads, and must escape by over-powering them. Each section of the game is on several levels (which you can jump up and down) and scrolls. Balls of energy are sometimes released when you kill a Triad – grab this and it becomes a powerful weapon you can hurl at an opponent. Most enemies can be killed with standard kicks, but each level has a Super Triad who can only be killed through magic.

Kicker

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1985—and later localized overseas under the vivid title Kung-Fu Master—Kicker is a pioneering side-scrolling beat 'em up that laid the crucial foundation for the entire martial arts action genre. The storyline casts players as the heroic master Kung, whose beloved Sylvia has been kidnapped by the sinister villain X. To rescue her, Kung must punch and kick his way through the five rigorous, trap-filled levels of the devil's temple, battling waves of diverse thugs, acrobatic knife-throwers, and menacing boss characters before facing X himself in a climactic showdown.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard arcade brawlers, Kicker emphasizes precision timing and tight spacing across continuous horizontal stages. Players have access to a versatile martial arts arsenal: standing, crouching, and jumping punches and kicks, allowing Kung to hit enemies at varying heights. As players progress, they must dodge falling flower pots, outmaneuver leaping pygmies, and counter weapon-wielding bosses who possess distinct health bars and attack patterns. Scoring points and collecting bonus items scattered throughout the temple grant crucial extra lives needed to conquer the game's notoriously brutal difficulty curve.
