Description

Lightning Fighters is a vertical scrolling shooter arcade video game by Konami. You must guide your ship (aircraft) over 10 stages, destroying waves of enemies.

There are two types of power-ups in the game: a vertical laser, wide and blue, and a fiery serpent-style blaster. The goal is to defeat all the enemies and the bosses, obtaining the highest number of points.

When you finish the 10 levels, the game starts again straight away with harder difficulty.

Lightning Fighters

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1990, Lightning Fighters (known in Japan as Trigon) is a high-octane vertical scrolling shoot-'em-up that thrusts players into a relentless futuristic aerial conflict. As Earth's final line of defense against an alien armada known as the Zos, pilots board advanced experimental starfighters to reclaim the skies. Built on Konami’s robust arcade hardware of the early '90s, the game stands out from its contemporaries through its vibrant sprite scaling, intense pseudo-3D perspective dives, and a pulsing synth-rock soundtrack that perfectly complements the frantic combat.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard shmup tropes, Lightning Fighters introduces a dynamic weapon evolution system tied to colored crystal power-ups dropped by specialized enemy squadrons. Players can harness three distinct offensive arsenals: a concentrated laser beam, a sweeping plasma whip, and wide-spread photon missiles. Collecting matching crystals upgrades your firepower levels, culminating in devastating screen-clearing "Trigon" bomb attacks that obliterate enemy formations. The game is notoriously unforgiving, featuring dense bullet hell patterns, aggressive mid-bosses, and intricate terrain hazards. Players must master precise micro-movements to thread the needle through crossfire while rescuing stranded pilots for bonus points.
