Mappy

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1983 and powered by the Namco Pac-Land hardware, Mappy is a pioneering platform-action arcade game that introduced vertically scrolling stages and unique trampoline mechanics. Players step into the tiny paws of Mappy, a dedicated police mouse belonging to the Micro Police squad. The overarching storyline casts Mappy on a mission to infiltrate the heavily guarded mansion of Nyamco (affectionately known as Goro), the boss of the notorious Mewkies cat burglar gang. Mappy’s goal is to recover stolen police loot, including paintings, televisions, and radios, while avoiding the feline syndicate across a multi-story house.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mappy’s gameplay revolves around timing, vertical navigation, and environmental manipulation. Instead of jumping freely, Mappy relies on a series of colorful trampolines attached to the floors of each level. Bouncing too many times in a row without a break causes the trampoline to stretch out, break, and cost Mappy a life. Players must master the art of stalling mid-air and timing their dismounts onto solid platforms. The primary offensive mechanism involves opening and closing electronic doors located on each floor. Triggering a door unleashes a powerful microwave wave that sweeps across the hallway, stunning and temporarily sweeping away any pursuing Mewkies or Nyamco. Additionally, players can detach flashing "Goro" signs to drop them on enemies for bonus points. Collecting items in matching pairs yields increasing point multipliers, adding a layer of strategic score-chasing. Between standard rounds, players encounter bonus stages where Mappy must bounce across balloons to pop them all within a strict time limit.
