Description

Long ago the evil Vaxxian Empire overran the galaxy. Most of humanity was enslaved and abducted to the Vaxxian homeworld. A few humans, who were scientists, managed to escape. At the current moment (according to the timeline of the game), the Empire has since collapsed. However, numerous Vaxxian space stations, all blindly controlled and defended by robots, still remain in the galaxy, mindlessly pursuing their original orders.
The small band of scientists who initially escaped managed to clone the great human hero Major Havoc, in order to fly his Catastrofighter through a wormhole in space, so that he may lead a clone army against the dreaded Vaxxian robots, and to liberate the remnants of humanity by destroying the enemy reactors. The player controls Major Havoc, the leader of this very band of clones.

Major Havoc

Overview & History

Released by Atari, Inc. in 1983 and designed by Owen Rubin, Major Havoc stands as one of the most mechanically ambitious vector graphics arcade games of its era. Conceived originally as a sci-fi epic blending multiple gameplay genres, the title was a response to the declining popularity of pure shoot-'em-ups by introducing intricate platforming elements. The storyline casts players as Rex Havoc, a galactic warrior resurrected from cryo-sleep to infiltrate and self-destruct the Vohaul-like stronghold of the oppressive Galactic Federation known as the Daravian Empire. Development was famously complex, featuring a hybrid control scheme and a non-linear level design that ultimately led to limited cabinet distribution, making original arcade units prized collector's items today.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Major Havoc uniquely bridges the gap between fast-paced vector space combat and intense maze-based platforming. The game loop is split into three distinct phases: first, players pilot a ship in a 360-degree vector space battle to blast through enemy armadas; second, they dock with the enemy mothership and transition into side-scrolling platform stages. In these platform segments, Rex Havoc must navigate subterranean corridors, rescue captive clones, plant explosives, and escape before the facility detonates. If the player runs out of time or lives, they enter a challenging third phase—a breakout-style minigame where successful ball-and-paddle play can earn extra lives and continue the mission. The vector visuals deliver crisp, glowing lines against a stark black background, emphasizing the futuristic claustrophobia of the Daravian stronghold. Rex's primary offensive move is his energy rifle, used to disintegrate robotic sentinels, while his mobility relies on precise jetpack-assisted jumps and wall-climbing mechanics to traverse multi-tiered vertical labyrinths.
