Description

The gameplay has you thrown into a particular hitman’s home turf and you must use every weapon imaginable as well as anything you can find in the environment (including the environment itself) to try to kill your competitor. Weapons can be typical like a rocket launcher or machine gun or absurd like a clown cannon or a bowl of hot soup. Despite dealing with a competition about murder, the game has a levity to it in all aspects.

The levels are also a star part of this game as they are varied and, in many cases, will begin to collapse as time goes on. This means that if the player doesn’t kill his competition in a set amount of time the level will literally start crumbling around you. The levels take place in various interactive locations, involving inside a plane, a moving train, an office building or even at the circus.

Overview & History

Released by Namco in 1995, The Outfoxies is widely acknowledged as the grand-father of the modern platform fighter, predating genre staples like Super Smash Bros. by four years. Created on Namco’s System NB-1 hardware, this bizarre and hyper-violent arcade gem tasks players with choosing one of seven eccentric assassins—including a chimpanzee in a business suit, a wealthy big-game hunter, and a pair of homicidal twin children—hired by the mysterious Mr. X to eliminate one another. Despite its innovative mechanics and frantic multiplayer appeal, the game suffered from limited distribution outside of Japan, making it a legendary cult classic among retro arcade enthusiasts.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional 2D fighters with stagnant backdrops, The Outfoxies takes place across dynamically interactive, multi-tiered environments that actively try to kill the combatants. Players battle atop speeding bullet trains, inside collapsing skyscrapers, and across soaring biplanes, utilizing fully destructible terrain and a massive arsenal of pick-up weapons ranging from standard submachine guns and bazookas to absurdities like homing pigeons, rolling bowling balls, and flamethrowers. Characters feature distinct move sets, weights, and projectile speeds, requiring players to master double-jumps, ledge-grabbing, and environmental hazards to knock opponents off-screen. Matches are frantic, highly chaotic, and reward spatial awareness just as much as twitch reflexes.
