Description

The inevitable sequel to the hugely-successful original finds the evil Bydo Empire once again intent on the destruction of all mankind. The infamous Beam Weapon and Pod Laser make a welcome return, as do the beautifully rendered, organic-looking levels. R-type II doesn’t do anything that the original didn’t do, but the sequel is every bit as good as its illustrious predecessor, with the same tight gameplay and imaginative level design that made R-type such a classic – although R-Type II is, if anything, more difficult than its already-unforgiving prequel.

R-Type II

Overview & History

Released by Irem in 1989, R-Type II is the direct arcade sequel to the legendary 1987 side-scrolling masterpiece. Set two years after the initial defeat of the Bydo Empire, humanity's celebration is cut short as the grotesque, bio-mechanical antagonists resurface through a dimensional rift, stronger and more mutated than before. Piloting the upgraded R-9C "Warhead" starfighter, the player must plunge back into the nightmare realm of the Bydo to eradicate the threat once and for all across six grueling stages. Expanding on its predecessor's biomechanical aesthetic and notorious difficulty, this sequel refined the frantic projectile-dodging formula while introducing devastating new offensive capabilities that pushed arcade cabinets and players to their absolute limits.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

R-Type II retains the iconic core mechanics of the series while introducing vital arsenal enhancements. The defining feature returns: the detachable "Force" pod. Players can attach this glowing orb to the front or rear of the R-9C to absorb enemy bullets, shield against minor impacts, and unleash close-range firepower. New to this entry is the Mega Wave Cannon; by holding down the attack button, the ship can charge an even more destructive blast than the original game, capable of piercing through heavily armored mid-bosses. Alongside the standard lasers (anti-ground lasers, bouncing crystals, and sweeping search lights), players can collect the newly introduced Anti-Bydo Missiles. The level design heavily punishes memorization errors, forcing split-second positioning as players navigate claustrophobic corridors, organic acid chambers, and face off against screen-filling monstrosities like the mechanical colossus in Stage 3.
