Description

Set a year after the events of the original Contra, Bill and Lance, the heroes from the previous game, are sent on a second mission. This time, the alien forces from the previous game have taken over an allied military base, possessing most of its troops. Bill and Lance must not only fight against their former comrade-in-arms, but also a new mutated form of the same alien creatures they fought during their previous mission.

Super Contra

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1988 as the arcade sequel to the massive hit *Contra*, *Super Contra* (subtitled *Alien No Gyakushu* in Japan) plunges elite soldiers Bill Rizer and Lance Bean back into the fray following the Red Falcon uprising. Tasked with stopping a full-scale extraterrestrial invasion orchestrated by a mutant alien organism that has possessed their former military comrades, players fight through infested jungles, heavily guarded military bases, and grotesque alien hives. Unlike its predecessor's strictly side-scrolling format, *Super Contra* innovated by incorporating overhead-view stages alongside the classic run-and-gun platforming action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The game supports two-player simultaneous co-op, injecting chaotic synergy into the frantic action. Players wield a standard rifle that can be upgraded by catching flying power-up capsules marked with weapon icons: Machine Gun (M), Spread Gun (S), Laser Gun (L), and the devastating Fire Ball (F), alongside the indispensable Barrier (B) for invulnerability. The overhead stages (Stages 2 and 4) utilize a unique pseudo-3D perspective where players rotate and move in eight directions while utilizing a targeting cursor to blast enemies lurking beneath. The fast-paced difficulty is relentless, demanding precise timing and memorization of enemy spawn points.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move in 8 directions, aim up/down/diagonally, and duck
  • Action Keys: Attack (Shoot) / Jump (Press Jump while holding down to drop through specific platforms)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
