Description

Scramble is a side scrolling shooter. Piloting a plane through varied (and mountainous) terrain, your goal is to infiltrate an enemy base and destroy it. Missiles, tanks, UFO’s, and other enemy artillery can all be found and will try to stop you. Colliding with any of these enemies, enemy fire, or the landscape will cause you to lose one of your planes. To fight back, your plane is equipped with both bombs and guns, which can destroy most of the enemies you’ll encounter. Your plane has a limited amount of fuel, and you’ll crash if you run out. To replenish the fuel supply, you must bomb the fuel depots, which will appear on the ground occasionally.

Released by Konami in 1981, Scramble is a seminal side-scrolling shoot 'em up that pioneered the continuous, multi-stage gameplay loop later perfected by the genre. As an unnamed pilot of a futuristic space fighter, your desperate mission is to penetrate deep into hostile alien territory, dodge treacherous subterranean terrain, and ultimately obliterate the enemy's secret planetary base before your fuel tanks run completely dry.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike fixed shooters of its era, Scramble forces players through six distinct, automatically scrolling sectors without pause, ranging from jagged cavern stalactites to heavily fortified enemy complexes. Survival demands multitasking: you must simultaneously manage forward-firing laser blasts to eliminate airborne saucers and drop manually targeted bombs to vaporize ground-based missile launchers, fuel depots, and radar installations. Adding relentless pressure, your ship operates on a strict fuel timer that constantly drains. The only way to replenish your reserves is by successfully bombing designated fuel tanks on the surface. As you progress, the terrain grows increasingly claustrophobic and enemy resistance intensifies, requiring absolute precision to navigate narrow corridors without crashing your ship.
