Description

Space Invaders DX consists of four different versions of the original Space Invaders plus two additional game modes, versus mode and parody mode. The versions of the original game all have the same gameplay but have different screen types. They are upright cabinet screen, black and white, black and white with cellophane overlay and colour.

The versus mode is played by two players simultaneously on a split screen. It’s round based and to win the round the player has to prevent the aliens from landing or clear all aliens. When winning a round the player is awarded with a medal and the first player with three medals wins the game. The versus mode has less aliens and only one barricade and some of the aliens are coloured. Shooting coloured aliens trigger certain actions which can be both positive and negative. This include clearing a whole line of invaders or having the aliens jump closer to the player or his opponent.

The parody mode plays just like the original Space Invaders but here each level has a theme based on other Taito games such as Bubble Bobble, The New Zealand Story, Arkanoid and Darius.

Space Invaders DX

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1994, Space Invaders DX serves as a nostalgic yet modernized tribute to the granddaddy of the shoot 'em up genre. Originally appearing in arcades as part of the Taito Memories wave and later ported to various consoles, this iteration was designed to celebrate the golden age of gaming while injecting vibrant color and clever variations into the monochrome heritage of 1978. The game's loose narrative retains the classic extraterrestrial menace: an relentless armada of pixelated aliens descends slowly toward the bottom of the screen, threatening Earth's solitary laser cannon. Unlike the austere original, DX introduces multiple modes of play, including a whimsical "Parody Mode" that swaps the standard sprites for characters from other classic Taito properties like Bubble Bobble and Chack'n Pop. It also features a two-player cooperative mode where gamers can alternate turns or play side-by-side to clear the cosmic skies.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Space Invaders DX sticks faithfully to its grid-based lineage while introducing welcome quality-of-life layers. Players control a sliding laser base at the bottom of the playfield, shielded by four destructible bunkers that slowly disintegrate under both alien and player fire. As you obliterate the descending rows of crabs, squids, and octopuses, the remaining invaders speed up incrementally, ratcheting up the tension alongside the iconic, bass-heavy heartbeat sound effect. The game includes the legendary "Nagoya Attack" exploit as an intentional feature, alongside mystery UFOs that cross the upper perimeter for bonus score multipliers. The standout mechanical addition is the puzzle-like stage progression in VS mode and the inclusion of dynamic power-ups and boss encounters in the modern variants, transforming a pure test of endurance into a rich, replayable arcade artifact.
