Description

It is the 1990s. In the beginning, World War III has at last expired. The people are left to pick up the pieces and rebuild their civilizations. However, vicious gangs that prey on these defenseless citizens are obstructing the reconstruction.

The main protagonists are Boris, Wade and Kyle, vigilantes who protect the feared and helpless. Their largest problem is the corrupt, incorrigible, ruthless and lethal gang known as “The Geld Gang”. They have commissioned every type of person imaginable. Purple-haired, leather-clad, chain-wielding, lead-pipe swinging, masked, martial art, orange-mohawked and men so strong and immune to pain they use manhole covers as shields.

One day, when the trio is patrolling the streets, alert, ready and able to help those in need, they see a woman named Sheena (a friend of theirs) waving at them walking across the street out of a supermarket with groceries. A moment later, Lord Geld’s right hand man, Red Freddy, snatches her away while riding on his purple hog. Now, the three braves must save Sheena from the grips of Lord Geld.

Violent Storm

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1993 for the custom System GX arcade hardware, *Violent Storm* serves as the spiritual and technical successor to arcade classics like *Final Fight* and Konami's own *Vendetta*. Set in a grim, post-apocalyptic future ravaged by nuclear devastation, the narrative follows a trio of hardened street brawlers—Boris, Ray, and Joe—on a gritty crusade to rescue Sheena, the kidnapped girlfriend of Boris, from the clutches of a ruthless gang known as the Mutants. While it arrived near the twilight of the classic 2D side-scrolling beat-'em-up era and struggled for widespread localization outside of Japan and Europe, the game gained a cult following for its flamboyant presentation, funky soundtrack composed by Kozo Nakamura and Michiru Yamane, and surprisingly deep combat system.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike many contemporaries, *Violent Storm* introduces unique character builds and environmental interactions. Players choose from the powerhouse grappler Boris, the lightning-fast martial artist Ray, or the balanced brawler Joe. The combat engine revolves around standard combinations that culminate in devastating throws, contextual running attacks, and crowd-clearing desperation moves that drain a small sliver of health. Distinctly, characters can pick up and hurl miscellaneous debris, pipe wrenches, and explosive barrels, or even use enemies as human bowling balls. Weapon durability adds tactical depth, forcing players to manage heavy iron pipes or butcher knives before they shatter. The game also features memorable, multi-phased boss encounters, destructible backgrounds, and branching pathways that lead through decaying urban slums, neon-lit nightclubs, and subterranean train yards.
