Warrior

Overview & History

Developed by Vectorbeam and released in 1979, Warrior holds a monumental place in gaming history as arguably the first-ever one-on-one arcade fighting game. Designed by Tim Skelly, the game bypassed traditional raster graphics by utilizing vector technology, producing clean, glowing line-drawings on a dark oscilloscope-style monitor. While text-based computer games and early experimental brawlers existed, Warrior was a true pioneer, translating medieval swordplay into a competitive arcade experience years before the genre exploded in the 1990s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike later fighting games with sprawling movesets, Warrior pits two knights against each other in a frantic, overhead-view duel inside a static castle courtyard bordered by obstacles like a central moat and stone walls. Players do not have health bars; instead, a single, decisive blow results in an instant kill, shifting the focus to positioning, timing, and psychological spacing. Character moves are delightfully raw and mechanical for their era. The fighters can maneuver in all eight directions, raise their shields to block incoming thrusts, and lash out with rapid sword lunges. Because obstacles obstruct movement and line-of-sight, matches often devolve into tense, tactical skirmishes where players circle each other, baiting out a missed strike before lunging in for the fatal puncture.
