Description

Warriors of Fate is a beat’em up with nine stages. Each contains large mobs including spearman, archers, strongmen, bomb-wielding opponents, and at least one Wei boss. There can be up to three players on-screen at the same time. Using two buttons, Attack and Jump, the characters all have standard moves typical of Capcom side-scrollers of the day. Common enemies including Wei soldiers such as bandits, privatees, wrestlers, fatties and thieves will keep popping up from everywhere. In the end of each stage there is a Wei general as stage bosses, e.g., Li Dian, Xiahou Dun, Xu Chu, Zhang Liao, Cao Ren, Xu Huang, the infamous Lu Bu as final boss. After defeating them all, there is also Cao Cao himself.

Feudal Chinese warriors fight for their lord against an evil warlord who is wreaking havoc and terror. Beaten opponents drop treasure, books and food which rejuvenate the combatants. Big bosses at the end of each level attempt to prevent your warriors from achieving their goals.

Warriors of Fate follows Liu Bei’s plight in Jingzhou from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, a history-based novel of China, set in the Three Kingdoms period as Cao Cao sets to invade his lands. In Warriors of Fate, Shu Han, led by Liu Bei, as in the novel, was everything “good” and “righteous”, while Wei, led by the ever suspicious and cunning Cao Cao, is portrayed as “evil” and “bad”. Liu Bei’s warriors begin by fighting Cao Cao’s forces at the Battle of Bowang, then Battle of Changban, then finally join up with Sun Quan to fight at the Battle of Red Cliff.

Warriors of Fate

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1992 as the sequel to Dynasty Wars, Warriors of Fate (known as Tenchi o Kurau II: Sekiheki no Tatakai in Japan) is a historical-fantasy arcade beat-'em-up loosely based on the revered Chinese epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Players journey through ancient China to thwart the tyrannical warlord Cao Cao at the legendary Battle of Red Cliffs. Unlike its predecessor, which forced players onto horseback, this title shifts the action to the ground, offering a visceral, finely tuned arcade brawler that stands as a pinnacle of Capcom's early 90s CPS-1 hardware catalog. The game distinguishes itself with dark, gritty historical-fantasy art direction, featuring mythological beasts, sorcery, and distinct character weaponries that elevate it far above standard martial arts beat-'em-ups of the era.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Warriors of Fate accommodates up to three players simultaneously, who choose from a roster of five iconic generals: Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun, Huang Zhong, and Kenshin (Wei Yan). Each warrior wields a unique weapon—from massive broadswords and double-edged spears to heavy bows—and boasts distinct attributes spanning speed, reach, and power. The combat mechanics are notably robust for the era, introducing a dedicated weapon-throw mechanic, devastating command-input blitz moves (such as quarter-circle motions paired with attack and jump), and the ability to mount enemy warhorses for mounted combat charges. Players can execute powerful defensive sweeping kicks, juggle grunts into corner traps, and unleash screen-clearing special attacks at the cost of health. As you cleave through waves of foot soldiers, archers, and armored berserkers across dynamic stages, you can pick up roasted meats, swords, and spiked clubs dropped by defeated foes to survive the grueling boss encounters against historic figures.
