Description

Zektor is a shoot-’em-up arcade game developed for vector-based G80 hardware, very similar to Atari’s Asteroids.

A fixed-screen, overhead shoot ’em up featuring a controllable ship with thrust and free rotation capabilities, similar to its predecessor Space Fury (and ultimately to Asteroids/Spacewar!). Your mission: infiltrate and recapture eight cosmic cities, presently held in thrall by a group of eight alien robots.

Each of these mechanical antagonists (some male, some female) will taunt you in its synthesized voice as you approach its captured city. Once there, you must power through three waves of defense, consisting of drones and fighters – some enemies may be shielded, requiring multiple laser blasts to take out. Down the screen travel the indestructible Moboids, which come in three flavors (one sends ships into an uncontrollable spin, another bounces them away, and another destroys them on contact); the playfield doesn’t wrap around, and bumping into the surrounding force-field will kick your ship back.

Once the defenses are repelled, you will arrive at the city itself, where you’ll face off against its robot conqueror, surrounded by concentric, rotating shields (a-la Star Castle). The robot will lob energy blasts at you as it tries to escape; if you manage to sneak a shot through the openings in its shields, your award is an extra life.

Zektor

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1981, Zektor stands as a rare and visually striking vector-arcade title that arrived during the golden age of wireframe graphics. Developed during a time when raster displays were becoming the industry norm, Sega leaned into the mesmerizing, glowing green-and-white neon aesthetic made famous by games like Asteroids. While it didn't achieve the massive mainstream saturation of contemporaneous hits, Zektor carved out a dedicated cult following for its intense, disorienting challenge and unique sci-fi premise. The game drops players into a grim, futuristic timeline where the Earth has been subjugated by the merciless Zektor Empire. As humanity’s last line of planetary defense, you pilot an experimental hover-fighter tasked with systematically neutralizing the mechanical alien armada before they completely drain the world's remaining energy reserves.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard fixed-screen shooters, Zektor combines fast-paced combat with tactical radar management across a sprawling, multi-directional vector playfield. Players must actively hunt down invading alien saucers, floating mines, and massive motherships that warp in from the outer edges of the radar grid. Your ship is equipped with a primary particle cannon for offensive strikes and a localized shield generator that temporarily deflects incoming enemy fire. A defining mechanic is the inclusion of tractor beams and orbital bombs, allowing players to manipulate floating debris or trigger screen-clearing explosions. The game's difficulty curve is notoriously brutal, punishing hesitation while rewarding spatial awareness and quick reflex-based target prioritization.
