Description

Legend is a side-scrolling beat ’em up.

The player controls a young commander which uses a green armour and helmet and must defending the kingdom lands from invading enemies, following the orders and instructions given by the old king, for it you’ll have to use money to making defect the enemy and recruit under your commands to form a legion of soldiers and make uses of different arms collected on the way, like bombs and arrows to defeat other enemies while you jump and dodges his attacks, always avoiding contact with any enemy for not to die and continue his legendary journey.

Developed by Kyugo. Legend was supposed to be published by Sega, but Kyugo wanted to sell the board themselves, so only a few boards were released.

Released in 1994 by Seibu Kaihatsu, Legend is a dark fantasy side-scrolling beat 'em up heavily inspired by Norse mythology and classic medieval epics. Set in the war-torn realm of Sellech, the game follows the heroic quest of Kaidan and Grand, two valiant warriors tasked with overthrowing the tyrannical rule of the corrupt King Clovis, who has allied himself with demonic forces. Developed during the golden age of arcade brawlers, Legend distinguishes itself through its heavily detailed pre-rendered sprite graphics, atmospheric orchestral-style soundtrack, and a gritty, unapologetically violent aesthetic that pays homage to dark fantasy cinema of the 1980s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard contemporaries of its era, Legend introduces robust combo-driven melee combat combined with a dedicated magic system. Players can choose between Kaidan, a swift and agile swordsman, and Grand, a powerhouse brute wielding a massive battle-axe. Both heroes feature an expansive repertoire of moves, including standard three-hit weapon combos, fierce overhead smashes, sliding attacks, and devastating aerial suplexes. Furthermore, players can unleash screen-clearing elemental magic spells by collecting glowing orbs dropped by defeated foes. The two-player cooperative mode allows for synchronized team attacks, adding deep tactical positioning to the chaotic hack-and-slash action across varied stages ranging from haunted forests to gothic castles.
