Description

MORTAL KOMBAT 3 is the third installment in this immensely popular and intensely gory series. Shao Kahn has assumed control of Earth and the Outworld, and now both are plunged into darkness, overrun by his barbaric beasts. You must clash with evil to restore order and put Shao Kahn in his place. Are you ready to sacrifice your soul in battle? Go toe-to-toe with 15 ruthless pugilists, including new fighters like Nightwolf, the four-armed Sheeva, riot cop Stryker, and Shao Kahn’s evil bride Sindel. Of course, you’ll also find your old favorites like Jax, Sonya, and Liu Kang. All of the moves from the arcade version are here as well, and you can also take on a friend and find out who is the king of kombat.

Mortal Kombat 3

Overview & History

Released by Midway in 1995, Mortal Kombat 3 shattered expectations by dragging the supernatural martial arts tournament out of mystical temples and into gritty, modern urban environments. Dispensing with the cinematic digitization of actors used previously, Midway re-filmed most of the cast using motion capture technology to allow for faster, more fluid animation. The storyline shifts dramatically from traditional tournament rules to an all-out planetary invasion: Shao Kahn resurrects his former queen, Sindel, on Earthrealm, merging dimensions and ripping the souls from millions of mortals. A scattered resistance of Earth's greatest warriors must band together to stop Kahn's shadow priests before the realms permanently fuse. This installment removed iconic fan-favorites like Scorpion and Kitana initially, introducing controversial newcomers such as Stryker, a riot-cop armed with a taser and grenades, alongside the cyborg assassins Cyrax and Sektor, injecting fresh dynamics into the lore.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

MK3 fundamentally redefined 2D fighting games by introducing the "Run" button, completely altering pacing and offensive pressure by allowing players to sprint toward opponents. This was balanced by the "Dial-a-Combo" system, which codified pre-set string combos into the game engine, making explosive damage accessible via precise sequence inputs rather than solely free-form juggling. Furthermore, the aggressive "Aggressor" meter temporarily boosted a player's speed and damage output if they maintained relentless offense. Defensive options expanded with the addition of "JK" (Jab-Kick) push-backs and the infamous "Mercy" feature, which allowed a victorious player to revive their opponent with a sliver of health before finishing them off. The chaotic violence reached new heights with the debut of "Animalities"—transforming fighters into beasts to slaughter their foes—alongside multiple stage Fatalities where combatants could uppercut rivals through ceilings into entirely different arenas.
