Description

Air Gallet is a vertically scrolling shoot’em up. You fly a fighter jet and have to defend yourself against airborne as well as terrain enemies, the end of each stage having the usual boss fight. Aside from the futuristic weaponry the game has a present-day military theme.

You have four weapons, laser beam, support drone, tracing missile or vulcan spread shot. For each you can collect up to four power-ups.

Released in 1996 by Gazelle—a studio founded by former Compile developers—Air Gallet (also known as Sky Guardian) is an intense, military-themed vertical scrolling shoot 'em up for the arcades. Unlike the whimsical fantasy aesthetics of many contemporaries, Air Gallet drops players into a gritty, near-future global conflict against a rogue military syndicate. The storyline follows elite fighter pilots navigating hazardous urban environments, heavily fortified naval bases, and stratosphere dogfights. Powered by cave-adjacent shooter pedigree, the game earned a cult following for its relentless difficulty, high-octane FM synth soundtrack, and beautifully detailed, industrial pixel art that showcases collapsing buildings and massive, multi-tiered boss mechs.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Air Gallet utilizes a classic three-button layout governing a standard shot, a screen-clearing bomb, and a distinct weapon-lock mechanism that allows players to fix their directional firing arc to target fast-moving aerial units or stationary ground installations. Players choose from different aircraft, each featuring unique shot patterns, speed profiles, and bomb yields. Power-ups collected from destroyed enemy squadrons upgrade your primary weaponry through distinct color-coded crystals, ranging from wide-spread plasma bursts to concentrated lasers. The scoring system rewards aggressive play, forcing pilots to weave through blinding bullet-hell patterns while maintaining close proximity to enemies to maximize score multipliers before triggering devastating tactical bombs.
