Description

Control a WWII-style plane over 32 vertically scrolling sea and landscapes. Shoot various types of enemy planes. Collect a variety of weapon power-ups.

1942 is set in the Pacific theater of World War II. The goal is to reach Tokyo and destroy the entire Japanese air fleet. The player pilots a plane dubbed the “Super Ace” (but its appearance is clearly that of a Lockheed P-38 Lightning). The player has to shoot down enemy planes; to avoid enemy fire, the player can perform a roll or “loop-the-loop”.

1942

Overview & History

Developed and published by Capcom in December 1984, 1942 is a legendary vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that defined the genre's golden era. Designed by Yoshiki Okamoto, the game is historically significant for shifting away from the deep space themes popular at the time, opting instead for a dramatic, pseudo-historical Pacific Theater setting during World War II. Players pilot a Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighter plane—affectionately nicknamed the "Super Ace"—on a perilous mission to break through enemy blockades and bomb the ultimate target: the Japanese battleship Yamato in Tokyo harbor. 1942 was a massive commercial success in arcades worldwide, pioneering the use of dramatic mid-screen aerial flips and establishing Capcom as a powerhouse in coin-op gaming, eventually paving the way for numerous home console ports and spiritual sequels like 1943: The Battle of Midway.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

1942 is structured across 32 fast-paced stages, tasking players with surviving relentless waves of enemy fighter planes, including nimble formations and deadly kamikaze squads. Unlike many traditional shooters, survival heavily relies on the iconic Roll Move (or loop-the-loop), executed by pressing a dedicated button. This defensive barrel roll makes the P-38 completely invincible for a few seconds, allowing it to evade inescapable bullet hell patterns or pass safely through enemy formations. Power-ups are scattered throughout the skies by shooting special red enemy formations; collecting the "POW" icon grants devastating upgrades such as twin fire, widespread missile spreads, or even a wingman formation that dramatically increases firepower. Boss encounters and score multipliers for accuracy round out the intense arcade challenge, where every destroyed squadron counts toward final survival.
