Description

Paperboy is a 1985 arcade game developed and published by Atari Games. The player takes the role of a paperboy who delivers a fictional newspaper called “The Daily Sun” along a suburban street on his bicycle. The game was ported to a wide range of video game consoles and personal computers. The Nintendo Entertainment System version is the first NES game developed in the United States, and the Sega Master System version represented the first SMS game developed in the United Kingdom. Paperboy is notable for its unusual theme, which extends to using bike handlebars as the controller.

A sequel for home computers and consoles, Paperboy 2, was released in 1991.

Paperboy

Overview & History

Released by Atari Games in 1984, Paperboy is an iconic arcade classic defined by its isometric perspective, vibrant pastel aesthetic, and uniquely grueling suburban setting. Created by John Salavitto and Dave Ralston, the game simulates the hazardous daily route of an ambitious suburban paper carrier. Instead of a standard joystick, the arcade cabinet famously featured bicycle handlebars equipped with a brake lever and a throw button, fully immersing players in the frantic pedal-pushing action.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Players control the titular paperboy through a hazardous suburban street over the course of a fictional one-week subscription period (Monday through Sunday). The primary goal is delivering daily newspapers to subscribing customers' mailboxes, front porches, or doorstep baskets while avoiding a relentless onslaught of suburban obstacles. Successfully hitting a subscriber's receptacle earns points, while missing breaks their subscription streak, and hitting non-subscribers' windows or property causes damage. The environment is aggressively hostile: skateboarders, runaway tires, aggressive dogs, elderly pedestrians, RC cars, and even un-mowed lawns actively obstruct progress. Surviving to the end of the day rewards the player with a bonus stunt track minigame.
