Description
The people of Gradius are in trouble. The ameoboid Bacterions have launched an all out attack against the planet, and it’s up to you to fly into battle and save them. Along the way you’ll be able to power up your ship with hyper speed, force fields, lasers, missiles, double beam cannons and more to help you battle.
Gradius is a side-scrolling shooter. Shooting certain enemies will leave a power up pod behind which can be collected to add more power to your ship. Each level features a wide variety of enemies trying to stop you, with a large boss at the end. Gameplay is for one player or two players alternating.
PlayChoice-10 is an arcade machine that can consist of as many as 10 different games previously available only on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) home console. The games for this system are in the modular form of circuit boards that are plugged into one of the ten open slots on the PlayChoice-10’s motherboard.
Gradius (PlayChoice-10)
Overview & History
Originally launched by Konami in 1985 as a revolutionary arcade masterpiece, *Gradius* was later adapted for Nintendo's unique PlayChoice-10 arcade hardware in 1986. The PlayChoice-10 system allowed arcade operators to house up to ten NES-based games in a single cabinet, complete with a dual-monitor setup that displayed game selection menus and strategy hints alongside the primary gameplay screen. This particular version brought the iconic side-scrolling space shooter—and the legendary Vic Viper starfighter—straight to arcade goers via Nintendo's altered hardware architecture. The storyline drops players into the cockpit of the Vic Viper to defend the planet Gradius against the invading Bacterion Empire across perilous alien landscapes, shifting gravity wells, and infamous Moai statues. This adaptation faithfully captures the relentless difficulty, atmospheric synthetic soundtrack, and genre-defining innovations of the original coin-op while translating its code through the lens of the Nintendo Entertainment System chipset.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Gradius introduced the industry-standard power-up gauge system, entirely abandoning traditional static items. As players destroy specific colored formations of enemy drones, they collect glowing power-up crystals that advance a highlighted cursor across a bottom-screen meter. Pilots must strategically choose when to redeem this cursor for specific upgrades: Speed Up, Missiles, Double Cannons, a front-facing Laser, defensive Options (glowing drones that mimic every move and shot of the Vic Viper), and a temporary Force Field energy shield. The gameplay demands absolute memorization of enemy wave patterns, tight navigation through claustrophobic biomechanical tunnels, and precision boss fights against the central core brain. The PlayChoice-10 variant retains this punishing yet deeply rewarding progression loop, where losing a life strips the Vic Viper of all accumulated upgrades, forcing players to scramble and survive with a base ship in later, highly hostile stages.
