Description

Asterix is a horizontal-scrolling beat’em up arcade game released in 1992 by Konami. It is based on the French comic series Asterix and Obelix. The player fights as either Asterix the Gaul or his best friend, Obelix, as they take on the ‘might’ of the oppressive Roman Empire. Asterix includes a variety of humorous fighting moves, which are demonstrated in the game’s attract mode. The artwork and feel of Asterix remains true to its French source material, and the game’s many humorous touches (such as the way defeated Legionnaires crawl away) will be instantly familiar to fans of the comic-book and cartoon series. Bonus levels – such as the chariot race that awaits at the end of the first level – introduce different gameplay elements to provide a break from the fighting.

Astérix

Overview & History

Released in arcades by Konami in 1992, Astérix is a vibrant, cooperative side-scrolling beat-'em-up based on the famous French comic book series by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. Set in 50 BC, the storyline kicks off when Julius Caesar’s Roman legionnaires brazenly steal the beloved village bard Assurancetourix (Cacofonix) and the precious magic potion barrel. Astérix and his loyal, menhir-hauling best friend Obelix must battle their way across scenic, hazard-filled historical landscapes—from a Roman camp and Gaulish forests to the sands of Egypt and the frosty peaks of Helvetia—to rescue their kidnapped compatriot and restore peace to the indomitable village. Konami's adaptation faithfully captures the source material's signature humor, featuring exaggerated cartoon animations, iconic slapstick sound effects, and classic comic-book-style visual punch lines when enemies are defeated.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Supporting up to two simultaneous players, participants can choose between the nimble Astérix or the powerhouse Obelix. The game relies on classic arcade beat-'em-up mechanics where players march horizontally through stages, brawling against waves of helmeted Roman soldiers, wild boars, and eccentric bosses. While Astérix is faster and utilizes Dogmatix (Idefix) the dog to bite foes, Obelix relies on brute force and heavy swings. Eating roast boar replenishes health, and picking up dropped helmets or golden laurels awards bonus points. The most iconic gameplay mechanic is the magic potion power-up; consuming it transforms the Gauls into invincible powerhouses, allowing them to swat Roman legionnaires into the stratosphere with a single glowing strike. The colorful sprite-based graphics and fluid multi-layered scrolling backdrops make this one of Konami's most visually charming 16-bit arcade titles.
