Description

A helicopter battle game based upon the TV show of the same name.

Airwolf, an advanced supersonic helicopter with stealth capabilities and a formidable arsenal, was designed by Dr. Charles Henry Moffet (David Hemmings) – a genius with a psychopathic taste for torturing and killing women – and built by the Firm, a division of the CIA (a play on the term “the Company”, a nickname for the CIA). As the series begins, Dr. Moffet and his crew steal Airwolf during a live-fire weapons test. During the theft, Moffet opens fire on the Firm’s bunker, killing a United States Senator and seriously injuring Firm deputy director Michael Coldsmith-Briggs III (codename “Archangel”). Moffet takes the gunship to Libya, where he begins performing acts of aggression – such as sinking an American destroyer – as a service for military strongman Muammar Gaddafi, who allows Moffet to keep Airwolf on Libyan soil.

Airwolf

Overview & History

Released by Kyugo Boueki in 1987, the arcade adaptation of Airwolf departs significantly from Data East's earlier home computer interpretations. Loosely based on the hit 1980s television espionage thriller, this vertically and horizontally scrolling shoot-'em-up plunges players into high-stakes Cold War aerial combat. Piloting the iconic, high-tech supersonic helicopter, players are tasked with infiltrating heavily guarded enemy airspace, rescuing captive allied agents, and obliterating hostile military installations. The arcade cabinet captured the gritty, militaristic aesthetic of the show, utilizing vibrant sprite-based graphics and a pulsing rendition of Sylvester Levay's unforgettable theme song to build relentless arcade tension across its multi-staged theater of war.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between dynamic vertical-scrolling flying zones and intense indoor base incursions. Unlike standard shmups, players must carefully manage a dual-weapon loadout consisting of forward-firing machine guns for aerial threats and gravity-dropped bombs for ground-based artillery, tanks, and missile silos. Fuel management adds a desperate survival layer; players must collect intermittent power-ups or successfully dock at designated landing pads to refuel and replenish ammunition before the helicopter plummets from the sky. Boss encounters at the end of each sector require precise dodging of bullet-hell barrage patterns while targeting vulnerable weak points on armored fortress structures.
