Superman

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1988, Superman is a classic side-scrolling arcade beat-'em-up loosely based on the post-Crisis comic books by John Byrne. The game drops players into a sprawling urban and cosmic conflict against the villainous Emperor Zaas, who has stolen Metropolis's iconic landmarks and scattered the city's inhabitants across space and time. Unlike later superhero brawlers that focused heavily on multi-character rosters, this coin-op classic is built entirely around the Man of Steel, taking full advantage of the dual-action joystick and two-button configuration to translate Kryptonian might into arcade-action glory.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Spanning five distinct stages, the game blends traditional ground-based brawler combat with mandatory horizontal shmup segments where Superman takes to the skies. On foot, players punch and kick generic thugs, robots, and alien beasts while managing a special projectile meter. By collecting golden crystals, Superman can unleash his signature heat vision to clear the screen of lesser threats. Destructible background elements often yield power-ups like health restorers or invulnerability shields. The pacing drastically shifts mid-level, transitioning into a scrolling shooter perspective where Superman flies through outer space and subterranean caverns, obliterating enemy armadas with rapid-fire energy blasts and iconic barrel rolls.
