Description

Two characters fight each other in martial arts matches held on several continents. The winner of two out of three rounds moves on to the next stage. The game also allows the Boss characters to be chosen for play.

Street Fighter II’: Champion Edition is a competitive fighting game released for the arcades by Capcom in 1992. It was the first of several updated versions of the original Street Fighter II: The World Warrior. The main changes consisted of the addition of the Grand Masters (the final four computer-controlled opponents in the single-player mode) as playable characters and mirror matches (same character vs. matches). The fighting techniques of the eight main characters from the original game were also further refined to allowed for more balanced competitive play.

Champion Edition was followed by Street Fighter II’ Turbo: Hyper Fighting, released several months later.

Street Fighter II': Champion Edition

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in March 1992, Street Fighter II': Champion Edition revolutionized the arcades by introducing the most demanded feature in fighting game history: mirror matches. Following the massive global success of the original 1991 world warrior tournament, players were finally permitted to select the same fighters, leading to intense color-coded rivalries between identical combatants. Set in the wake of the fallen Shadaloo crime syndicate, the world's most formidable martial artists are summoned once again by the megalomaniacal dictator M. Bison to prove their ultimate supremacy across exotic global arenas, ranging from E. Honda's steamy bathhouse to Vega's cage-match Spanish amphitheater.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Champion Edition refined the foundational six-button arcade control scheme (three punches, three kicks) into a high-octane chess match of spacing, priority, and reflex. Most crucially, this iteration made the infamous boss characters—Balrog, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison—fully playable for the first time, each boasting devastating signature techniques like Sagat's Tiger Uppercut and Balrog's ferocious Dash Straight. Game balance was fiercely re-tuned: Ryu and Ken received tweaked fireball recovery frames, while Zangief gained improved priority on his spinning lariat. The pacing was accelerated, rewarding players who mastered complex motion inputs (quarter-circles, charge-downs, and 360-degree rotations) to execute projectile zoning, cross-up aerials, and relentless combo pressure that defined the 90s competitive arcade scene.
