Description

Use your bionic arm to climb through levels and shoot enemies. Collect parachuting weapons and bonus point items that fall from the sky.

The original arcade game was advertised in the United States as a sequel to Commando, going as far to refer to the game’s main character as Super Joe (the protagonist of Commando) in the promotional brochure, who was originally an unnamed member of a “special commando unit” in the Japanese and World versions.

Bionic Commando

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1987 as a coin-operated arcade cabinet known in Japan as *Top Secret*, *Bionic Commando* revolutionized run-and-gun platforming by permanently replacing the traditional jump button with a grappling hook. Players control Super Joe (or the unnamed Bionic Commando in localized versions), an elite operative infiltrating a sinister, militaristic empire led by the resurrected leader, Master-D. Unlike standard action games of the era where verticality required frantic leaping, Capcom engineered a deliberate, momentum-based traversal system. The arcade original differed drastically from its famous NES successor, utilizing a vertical-scrolling, high-difficulty formula where players navigated through dense enemy bases, heavily armed fortresses, and claustrophobic jungle corridors, culminating in the notorious overhead helicopter boss fight.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core mechanic centers entirely on the bionic arm, operated via an 8-way joystick. Instead of jumping over chasms or onto ledges, players must shoot the mechanical claw straight ahead or at diagonal angles to latch onto platforms, swing across deadly gaps, or pull themselves upward. Timing and angle precision are paramount; missing a grapple hook often results in instant death via bottomless pits or roaming enemy patrols. Unlike the NES version, the arcade original features unique vertically scrolling stages alongside traditional horizontal ones, forcing players to master vertical swinging and quick-draw pistol combat simultaneously. Power-ups scattered throughout the levels upgrade the player's weapon firepower, offering machine guns and spread shots to annihilate the Albatross Empire's foot soldiers, guard turrets, and mechanized bio-weapons.
