One day, the twins Bubby and Bobby, intermarried with Bub and Bob, playing together to the tower where they live, are transformed into bubble-blowing dragons by the evil Dark Super Great Dragon that takes possession of the tower. Bubble Memories (バブルメモリーズ) is the sequel to Bubble Symphony and is the fifth Bubble Bobble game (although it is listed as being the third). Unlike Bubble Symphony, this game stars only two dragons, Bub and Bob, like the original Bubble Bobble.

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1996, Bubble Memories: The Story of Bubble Bobble III marked a triumphant return to the classic arcade platforming roots of the franchise after several spin-offs. Unlike its predecessors, this installment introduces a poignant twist to the lore: the iconic dragon brothers, Bub and Bob, find themselves trapped inside a massive, nostalgic dream world triggered by a mystical book, forced to rescue their captured girlfriends. Utilizing Taito's refined F2 hardware, the game dazzles with vibrant, high-resolution sprites, whimsical parallax-scrolling backgrounds, and an unforgettable upbeat chiptune soundtrack that captures the essence of pure arcade joy.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay retains the addictive trapping-and-popping formula of the original 1986 classic while introducing revolutionary mechanics. Players navigate through over 80 creatively designed, single-screen stages populated by whimsical enemies. The defining new mechanic is the 'Super Bubble' charge; by holding down the attack button, players can blow massive bubbles that engulf multiple enemies simultaneously or alter the environmental flow. Furthermore, the game features a dynamic water current mechanic in later stages, changing traversal physics, alongside collectible alphabet letters that spell "MEMORY" to unlock secret rooms and devastating screen-clearing power-ups like umbrellas and clock items. Speed and positioning remain paramount, as lingering too long summons the dreaded invincible Baron Von Blubba to harass slower players.
