Description

This video game is based on the cartoon television series Bucky O’Hare and the Toad Wars under license from Hasbro, Inc. While it is generally classified as a scrolling -platform game, as the player’s character is also armed with a laser gun, it adds elements of a scrolling shooter.

Much like the cartoon, Bucky O’Hare features colorful animation, and voice actors from the series were hired to participate in the game’s cut scenes.

Bucky O'Hare

Overview & History

Released in 1992 by Konami, *Bucky O'Hare* stands as one of the golden era's most vibrant and mechanically polished arcade beat-'em-up/run-and-gun hybrids. Based on continuity from Larry DiTillio and Neal Adams' comic book and the subsequent animated series, Konami adapted the green-skinned hare's cosmic crusade against the evil Toad Empire into a high-octane 4-player cooperative arcade experience. Unlike the distinct NES platformer released around the same time, the arcade cabinet channeled Konami’s mastery over co-op arcade hardware (similar to *The Simpsons* and *Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles*), delivering stunning sprite work that authentically captured the Saturday-morning cartoon aesthetic. Players select from a roster of resistance fighters—Bucky, Jenny the Cat, Blinky the Android, and Dead-Eye Duck—to rescue the kidnapped crew of the Righteous Indignation across richly detailed planets and enemy starships.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The gameplay alternates between blistering horizontal run-and-gun segments and arena-style boss encounters. Each character features distinct projectile behaviors, melee ranges, and agility stats. Bucky relies on a balanced rapid-fire blaster and a high-jumping aerial flip; Jenny utilizes devastating psionic energy blasts; Blinky fires bouncing lasers with incredible screen-clearing utility; and Dead-Eye Duck wields dual-blasters paired with a jetpack dash. The controls are strictly mapped across a standard 8-way joystick alongside dedicated Attack, Jump, and Bomb (Special) buttons. Players can unleash screen-clearing plasma bombs when overwhelmed by waves of green-skinned toad infantry, mechs, and airborne troopers. Environmental hazards, destructible cover, and fast-paced vehicle chase stages inject immense variety into the core shooting loop. Supported by an infectious, high-energy chiptune soundtrack and massive, beautifully animated sprite bosses, Konami's *Bucky O'Hare* remains a pinnacle of 90s arcade co-op design.
