Released first as an arcade game on Sega’s ST-V hardware in 1997. Only months later, it received a virtually arcade-perfect console port on the Sega Saturn. Considered the true sequel to the first game in the series, Cotton 2 also marks the introduction of two new primary characters: Appli, a young princess, and her anthropomorphic hat, Needle. Cotton 2 sees a return to traditional horizontal scrolling in the series, but it also stands out among shoot ’em ups in general for its unique gameplay system. With a heavy incorporation of Newtonian physics, Cotton 2 ultimately mixes elements of 2D platformers with traditional shoot ’em up gameplay. The first release of Cotton 2 on the Sega Saturn also included a mini-calendar for 1998.

The storyline follows the sugar-crazed witch Cotton and her fairy companion Silk as they embark on another chaotic quest to save the magical land of Fairyland and secure their beloved willow treats, while clashing against rival magician Appliqué and a resurgence of dark forces. Unlike its linear predecessor, Cotton 2 revolutionized the franchise by swapping static power-ups for an intricately physics-based combat system that demands mastery over momentum, elemental magic, and close-quarters melee interactions.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

What truly sets Cotton 2 apart from standard arcade shooters is its revolutionary command-input system, heavily inspired by fighting games. Players can unleash distinct magical spells, fire directional beams, and manipulate fallen enemies using the grab-and-throw mechanic. By pummeling foes or collecting elemental crystals (fire, water, wind, earth), players charge a powerful meter capable of unleashing screen-clearing devastation.
