Description

Blades Of Steel is a hockey arcade action game (gameplay doesn’t require the need to worry about statistics or provide the ability to customize teams.) Two players can play against each other, or one player against the computer. In one player mode there are single game and tournament mode options. From time to time a fight may break out, which will provide a close up view of the two players. The player has control during the miniature fight game sequence, with the loser having to spend time in the penalty box. The referee will break up fights that go on too long, and calls a few penalties such as icing. Several short clips of digitized voices are also featured.

Overview & History

Developed and published by Konami, Blades of Steel hit arcade floors in 1987 before receiving its legendary home console ports. Eschewing complex hockey licenses, Konami delivered a fast-paced, arcade-tuned interpretation of North American ice hockey that prioritized raw physical aggression over tactical simulations. Instead of a traditional narrative storyline, the game plunges players straight into high-octane tournament play, where eight fictional cities—ranging from New York to Vancouver—battle for the coveted championship trophy. Its distinct digitization of digitized voice samples ("Fight!", "Get the pass!") and intense organ-driven intermission music instantly cement its nostalgic, retro-futuristic arcade atmosphere.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard sports titles, Blades of Steel introduces a unique top-down perspective that vertically scrolls across the ice rink. Players control a three-man skater team plus a goalie. The core mechanic revolves around relentless offensive rushes, precision passing, and an infamous penalty/fighting system. When two opposing players collide persistently, the screen transitions abruptly into a side-scrolling, one-on-one fistfight. Landing consecutive punches knocks out the opponent, sending them to the penalty box for a power play. Controls utilize an eight-way joystick and two primary buttons: passing and shooting when on offense, or checking and switching active skaters when on defense. Extra features include dramatic penalty shootouts upon tied regulation play, and challenging period-ending minigames.

Keyboard Controls

  • Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move skater / Aim shot
  • Action Keys: Pass / Shoot (Offense) or Poke check / Body check (Defense)
  • Enter: Start / Pause
