Description

Hit the Ice is a hockey video game originally released by Williams to arcades in 1990. Featuring a cartoonish representation of the sport, Hit the Ice features games with three players on each team (forward, defense, and goalie). Unlike standard hockey, there are very few rules, as players are encouraged to trip, elbow and kick opponents.

Hit the Ice

Overview & History

Released by Taito in 1990, Hit the Ice is a delightfully chaotic, highly eccentric arcade sports game that tosses standard hockey rulebooks straight into the penalty box. Blending traditional ice hockey with over-the-top, beat-’em-up violence, the game invites players to experience a prehistoric-meets-modern fantasy league. There is no official storyline arc other than dominating the rink by any brutal means necessary—whether through pristine slapshots or launching flying drop-kicks directly into the opposing goalie's face. Taito infused the cabinet with vibrant, cartoonish pixel art and booming sound effects, creating a distinctly zany multiplayer experience that stood out in local arcades against traditional fighting and racing cabinets.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Hit the Ice operates on a frantic 3-on-3 format, allowing players to choose from four distinct national teams, each featuring quirky, exaggerated player archetypes. Gameplay mechanics seamlessly merge sports simulation with arcade brawling. When you possess the puck, the controls function similarly to a fast-paced hockey title featuring lightning-quick passes and scorching wrist shots. However, the moment you lose possession, the game transforms into a side-scrolling brawl. Characters can throw haymakers, slide-tackle opponents into the boards, and execute signature moves unique to their class. Referees are entirely non-existent, meaning tripping, elbowing, and outright pummeling the opposing team is actively encouraged to clear a path to the net. Special power-ups and bizarre comedic visual gags punctuate every period, ensuring that no two matches play out the same way.
