Tank Force is a multi-directional shooter arcade game that was released by Namco in 1991; it was the last game to run on their System 1 hardware (which had been in use for four years), is the sequel to Battle City, which was released six years earlier and is a sequel to Tank Battalion, which had been released five years before it (and eleven years before this title). The US version of the game was also the first of seven games from the company to display the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s “Winners Don’t Use Drugs” screen during its attract mode – the others are Steel Gunner 2, F/A, Cosmo Gang the Puzzle, Knuckle Heads, Lucky & Wild, and Numan Athletics. Exvania and Super World Court, which were Japan-exclusive, may also feature the screen in their attract mode if the “Display FBI Screen” setting in the games’ options menus has been set to “Yes”.

Released in Japanese arcades in 1991 by Namco, Tank Force serves as the spiritual and chronological successor to the legendary 1985 NES and arcade classic, Battle City. Operating on Namco’s System 2 hardware, this overlooked gem took the grid-based, top-down tank combat of its predecessor and injected it with vibrant, destructible environments, digitized speech samples, and chaotic four-player simultaneous cooperative gameplay. While it never achieved the massive household name status of Namco’s other early nineties hits, Tank Force refined retro military puzzle-action to a fine art, offering players a frantic race to defend their central base eagle while systematically eradicating waves of enemy armor across a diverse theater of urban, industrial, and wasteland maps.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core objective revolves around navigating labyrinthine stages composed of brick, steel, water, and forests, eliminating every enemy tank before they breach your defenses. Unlike the original Battle City, Tank Force introduces dynamic power-ups that alter your combat capabilities significantly. Collecting stars upgrades your primary cannon into rapid-firing dual-barrels or laser-piercing artillery. Power-ups like the pocket watch freeze all hostile movement temporarily, the shovel temporarily fortifies your base headquarters with indestructible titanium walls, and the star icon grants temporary invincibility. Players encounter varied enemy classes—from nimble scout buggies to heavily armored tank destroyers that require multiple direct hits. Between standard stages, players engage in high-speed bonus rounds designed to maximize score multipliers by destroying as many targets as possible within a strict time limit.
