Description

You are Rockford, and you have to dig through monster infested caves in search of diamonds. In each level you must collect a certain number of these diamonds, in order to open a portal to the next stage. Enemies can be squashed by falling boulders, which are released when the ground below them is removed or they are pushed onto empty ground, but be careful because these can also squash you. In later levels, difficulty is increased by many puzzle elements and shorter time limits.

There are 16 levels to be completed and five different skill levels available, which affect the number of jewels which must be collected and the time limit.

Overview & History

Developed by Peter Liepa and Chris Gray, Boulder Dash was originally programmed on the Atari 8-bit family before First Star Software brought its addictive puzzle-mining formula to the arcades in 1984. The game casts players as Rockford, an intrepid cave-explorer tasked with excavating underground caverns. The storyline is elegantly minimalist: Rockford must navigate a series of claustrophobic, earth-filled caves to collect glittering diamonds while avoiding subterranean hazards. Its revolutionary blend of twitch reflexes and grid-based logical puzzle-solving spawned a massive franchise with numerous sequels and clones across nearly every computing platform of the 1980s.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around manipulating gravity, earth, and physics-bound boulders across a scrolling, single-screen cave. Rockford uses his trusty pick to carve paths through loose dirt. However, players must exercise immense caution: dislodging dirt from beneath a boulder causes it to hang precariously before crashing down due to gravity, which can crush Rockford or block vital pathways. To successfully clear a stage, Rockford must collect a predetermined quota of diamonds while racing against a strict countdown timer. Danger lurks in every corner, including hostile creatures like Fireflies and Butterflies that patrol the tunnels, and the dreaded Ameba, which grows uncontrollably if not walled off. Strategically dropping boulders on enemies or using falling rocks to trap foes is essential for survival, offering a deep layer of tactical depth beneath its deceptively simple exterior.

Keyboard Controls

Arrow Keys / D-Pad: Move Rockford through dirt, empty space, and tunnels
Action Keys: Press and hold a modifier key with a directional arrow to mine/destroy adjacent dirt without moving Rockford's position
Enter: Start / Pause the game
