Description

A modern airplane shooter. This is the final game in the 194X series. The graphics are great, the big airplanes are tough but with a super weapon, you will stand a chance.

You can choose between 3 fighters, each of which has a different mix of speed, default weapon-power, and homing weapon-power.

SHOOT is for the primary weapons, and BOMB controls a limited number of special weapons you can get extra by collecting powerups. During the game, if you hold down SHOOT for a short time, a power-shot missile will be released and whatever it hits will be “locked” for a period of time or until it is destroyed. While the target is “locked”, you will fire extra weapons that automatically home in on the locked target.

19XX: The War Against Destiny

Overview & History

Released by Capcom in December 1995 for the CP System II arcade hardware, *19XX: The War Against Destiny* represents the fifth installment in Capcom's legendary *19XX* vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up franchise. Unlike its predecessors which traded heavily in World War II historical fiction, *19XX* pushes the timeline into a dieselpunk, near-future alternate reality where a rogue military faction known as the Outer Agency threatens global annihilation. Players pilot futuristic, high-altitude strike fighters across devastated urban centers, frozen tundras, and formidable airborne fortresses to dismantle the enemy’s doomsday weapon. Distinct from standard arcade shooters of the era, *19XX* introduced a strategic risk-and-reward scoring system tied directly to offensive pressure, pushing the genre beyond simple pattern memorization and twitch reflexes.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay revolves around a unique "Charge Shot" mechanic. By holding down the primary fire button, players can charge their aircraft's weaponry to unleash a devastating barrage of homing missiles or screen-clearing energy blasts. However, prolonged charging leaves the player vulnerable to enemy fire, creating a tense tactical balance between aggressive point-blank destruction and defensive evasion. Additionally, the game features a specialized "Special Attack" gauge that fills as players destroy targets or collect medals; depleting this meter executes a cinematic bomb maneuver that wipes out standard bullets and inflicts massive damage on bosses. Players can choose between three distinct aircraft: the lightning-fast Lightning, the balanced Mosquito, and the heavily armored Shiden, each possessing unique speed, shot spread, and bomb properties. Surviving waves of enemy squadrons, massive dreadnoughts, and multi-phased boss encounters requires precise micro-dodging through dense bullet hell patterns. Defeating specific red-colored formation leaders yields upgraded power-ups, extending the aircraft's firepower and scoring multipliers.
