Description

Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder is a side-scrolling arcade hack ‘n’ slash game released in 1992 by Sega. It was the first 32-bit game in the series. It still remains an arcade exclusive as of 2010.

The player characters are Goah the giant, Stern the barbarian, Dora the Kentauride, and Little Trix, a young elf lad who carries a pitchfork. None of the characters from the first game are playable, although Gilius Thunderhead from the first game rides on Goah’s back. The main enemy is once again Death Adder.

Overview & History

Released by Sega in 1992 for the System 32 hardware, Golden Axe: The Revenge of Death Adder stands as the absolute pinnacle of Sega’s fantasy beat-'em-up franchise. Eschewing a direct port to the Sega Genesis, this arcade masterpiece pushed hardware limits with massive, beautifully animated sprite work, scaled multi-tiered stages, and an orchestral fantasy score. The storyline unites a bizarre band of anti-heroes—Goah the giant carrying the barbarian Gilius Thunderhead on his shoulder, Dora the centaur, and Stern Blade the dark wizard—as they resurrect to avenge humanity and slaughter the tyrannical giant Death Adder once and for all.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike its predecessors, Revenge of Death Adder introduces four-player simultaneous chaos, destructible environments, branching pathways, and interactive siege weapons like ballistas and catapults. Magic is no longer collected via sleeping blue thieves; instead, players gather glowing green and gold potions dropped by goblins to unleash screen-clearing elemental devastation, which scales in power depending on how many vials are stored. Riding mounts returns with expanded ferocity—players can command fire-breathing dragons, mantis-like beasts, and skeleton horses that bite and whip foes. Character movesets are deeply satisfying, featuring devastating running shoulder-charges, aerial weapon plunges, and ferocious team-up combos that allow players to toss allies directly into enemy crowds.
