Description

In the year 2090, Earth has suddenly become the target of deranged aliens. Following the invasion, a new cutting-edge weapon, the Raiden Supersonic Attack Figther, based on the destroyed alien craft, is created for humanity’s hope for survival.

Raiden

Overview & History

Developed by Seibu Kaihatsu and originally unleashed in Japanese arcades in 1990, Raiden is a seminal vertical-scrolling shoot 'em up that permanently defined the bullet-hell and military shmup genres. Set in the year 2090, humanity faces a devastating extraterrestrial invasion by the VCD. To counter this existential threat, Earth's defense forces engineer the "Raiden" supersonic attack fighter—a solitary, hyper-advanced craft tasked with spearheading a desperate counter-offensive across eight hostile stages spanning ruined cities, alien-infested jungles, and orbiting starbases.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Raiden is celebrated for its relentless pacing, precision hitboxes, and deep weapon-upgrade ecosystem. Players control the signature red fighter, collecting power-up crystals dropped by enemy formations. The arsenal includes the straight-firing Red Laser, the wide-spreading Blue Plasma Beam, and the homing Proton Missiles. Defensive backup arrives via lethal cluster bombs that instantly wipe out on-screen grunts and clear paths through dense barrage patterns. The game also introduces the iconic "Fairy"—a hidden helper rescued from buildings that yields massive score bonuses. Unlike its sequels, the original Raiden relies on checkpoint respawns rather than instantaneous revives, forcing players to memorize enemy spawn waves and bullet trajectories to survive its punishing difficulty curve.
