Description

A jewel heist gone wrong sees Mr Burns’s sidekick, Smithers, kidnapping Maggie and making his escape. Between one and four players take on the role of either Homer, Marge, Lisa, or Bart in this colorful, horizontally-scrolling beat-em-up from Konami. Each Simpsons character possesses an attacking move specific to them; Marge is armed with a vacuum cleaner, Lisa has a skipping rope, Bart has his skateboard, and Homer fights with his fists. The players must battle their way through a variety of Simpsons-themed levels – such as Springfield and Krustyland – fighting goons, thugs, zombies, drunks, firemen, and several Simpsons regulars. Many Simpsons characters that don’t appear as enemies have ‘cameo’ scenes in the game (Otto working at a burgerstand in Krustyland, for example). The archetypal ‘boss’ character awaits the players at the end of every stage. The game ends with a final showdown with the evil Mr. Burns in his luxurious mansion.

Released by Konami in 1991, *The Simpsons* is a legendary arcade beat-'em-up that captured the chaotic charm of Matt Groening’s animated family at the height of their early-90s cultural dominance. The storyline kicks off in bizarre Springfield fashion: Waylon Smithers, executing a diamond heist for Mr. Burns, bumps into the Simpson family on the street, causing a stolen, priceless gem to lodge directly into Maggie's pacifier. Smithers and a horde of hired goons immediately kidnap Maggie, setting off a frantic, four-player cooperative rescue mission across eight whimsical levels, from Krusty-Lu Studios to Springfield's nuclear power plant, before culminating in a final showdown against Mr. Burns inside a heavily guarded compound.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard generic brawlers of the era, Konami injected unique personality and cooperative mechanics into the gameplay. Up to four players can simultaneously control Homer, Marge, Bart, or Lisa, each armed with unconventional melee weapons: Homer punches and kicks with sheer mass, Marge wields a deadly vacuum cleaner, Bart brandishes a trusty skateboard for fast mobility and drive-by strikes, and Lisa swings a heavy jazz sax. The standout mechanic is the team-attack system, where two players can grab each other's hands to execute devastating spinning clotheslines or dual-character hurl attacks to clear swarms of rival thugs, ninjas, and security guards. Sprinkled throughout the stages are frantic mini-games like balloon-pumping contests and pie-eating challenges, alongside healing items disguised as donuts, soursop drinks, and Krusty Burgers.
