Description
Ten mutant heroes and villians compete in one-on-one combat to decide the fate of the world. Each hero and villian has special powers that can be unleashed upon opponents. Play culminates after defeating the two mutant bosses, The Juggernaut and Magneto.
Based upon the popular comic book series X-Men by Marvel Comics, this game gives the players the opportunity to pit their favorite mutant heroes and villians against one another. The game play is similar to that of the Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams series. Players can control either one of the six X-Men (Cyclops, Storm, Ice Man, Colossus, Psylocke, and Wolverine), or one of their four evil adversaries (Silver Samurai, Spiral, The Sentinel, and Omega Red). Once their characters have been selected, the players will meet each of the other nine opponents in one-on-one combat.
After defeating all the opponents, a player’s mutant will go head-to-head with the two bosses, The Juggernaut and Magneto. Like in Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams, each mutant has a special power that can be unleashed upon opponents by performing certain combinations of button and joystick movements. The amount of damage a mutant’s special power will do depends upon the amount of energy the character has stored up in his power meter. Energy is stored in the power meter when your mutant is hit, blocks a hit, or attacks his opponent.
X-Men: Children of the Atom
Overview & History
Released by Capcom in 1994 to coin-op arcades before making its way to the Sega Saturn and PlayStation, X-Men: Children of the Atom stands as a monumental pillar in fighting game history. It laid the direct technical and visual groundwork for the legendary Marvel vs. Capcom franchise. Loosely adapting the iconic "Fatal Attractions" comic book crossover, the narrative follows Earth's mutant defenders as they thwart the villainous Magneto from activating an electromagnetic pulse generator capable of destroying human civilization from his asteroid base, Avalon. Capcom captured the vibrant, dynamic aesthetic of Jim Lee’s 90s comic art style, introducing hand-drawn sprites that brought the pages of Marvel Comics to explosive life with dazzling special effects and iconic voice clips.
Gameplay Features & Mechanics
Mechanically, Children of the Atom revolutionized the genre by introducing hyper-mobility features that became staples of the sub-genre: super jumps, frantic air-dashing, and blocking in mid-air. The game utilizes a six-button layout—three punches and three kicks—alongside a unique gauge system. Below the health bar sits the X-Power meter, which fills as players deal or receive damage, allowing them to unleash screen-filling Hyper Special Moves, such as Wolverine’s Berserker Barrage X or Iron Man's Proton Cannon. Players can also utilize the "Hyper Armor" mechanic on select heavy characters, or perform Guard Breaks and Infinite Combos with surgical precision. The playable roster includes fan-favorites like Storm, Cyclops, Psylocke, Colossus, and Iceman, alongside hidden bosses Juggernaut and Magneto. Gamers can even unlock Akuma from Capcom's Street Fighter series as a secret challenger, bridging two massive gaming universes.
