Overview & History

Released by Capcom in 1990 for the CPS1 arcade system, Magic Sword is a dark fantasy side-scrolling hack-and-slash platformer that casts players as "The Brave One," an unnamed hero imprisoned inside the towering Dark Tower. Tasked by the Goddess of Justice with ascending 50 floors to destroy the wicked Drokmar and his ultimate weapon, the titular Magic Sword, the game combines mythical horror with classic coin-op action. Ports to the Amiga, Atari ST, and SNES followed, cementing its cult status.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Progression through the tower's 50 floors is split into distinct stages, each culminating in a boss battle against Drokmar's monstrous lieutenants. A defining mechanic is the rescue system: players can liberate various imprisoned AI companions—ranging from a wizard and an amazon to a lizardman and a knight—who level up alongside you and offer crucial fire support, healing, or ranged attacks. The protagonist wields a standard sword that can be charged for a spinning area-of-effect slash or upgraded via magical orbs found in cracked walls and hidden treasure chests. Players can also transform into a beast form temporarily by collecting specific power-ups.
