Description

This is the 2008 remake by the almighty M2. Masters of the port/remake/remaster genre. They did not disappoint with this release, an excellent updated version of the original, on the super rare 16C variant of the Sega System 16 arcade hardware, which featured higher clock speeds and better audio than its A & B predecessors.

The original was released on the earlier Sega System E board.

This was released to be played on various platforms, but M2 being M2, they made the game entirely for original Sega arcade hardware first, despite being almost 20 years old by 2008, then “ported” from there. Dedication to authenticity is M2!

Opa-Opa is at it again in this zany return to his original homeland some ten years later. Welcome to Fantasy Zone II where perils are great and rewards even greater. During your visit you’ll discover that peace is at stake once again and those who threaten it are more cunning and wicked than before. So beware, the evil Blackhearts are near and they’re not alone. Scores of unusual and seemingly innocent creatures will enthusiastically approach you. But don’t be fooled. They’re not here to help. They’re henchmen for the dark powers of the Blackhearts. And they’ll sabotage every chance you’ve got to protect the warp gates from total ruin. So fight valiantly, because just when you think you’ve made it, the Blackhearts will be waiting.

Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa (System 16C Version)

Overview & History

Originally crafted by Sega for the Master System in 1987, *Fantasy Zone II: The Tears of Opa-Opa* received a stunning, long-awaited arcade homecoming decades later. Utilizing Sega's powerful System 16C hardware, this version reimagines the pastel-hued, bi-directional scrolling shooter with gorgeous, vibrant sprite scaling and lush background art that far exceeds its 8-bit predecessor. The bittersweet storyline follows the sentient, winged spaceship Opa-Opa as he battles once more against the lingering Menon forces to rescue his father and cure the sorrow of the sentient planet. Unlike standard linear arcade shooters, the game introduces a dimension-shifting mechanic where players warp between Light and Dark sides of each stage via warp gates, hunting down hidden enemy generators called Sprues to purge the corruption.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Gameplay revolves around clearing stages by destroying all active Sprues on both the Light and Dark planes before facing off against grotesque, whimsical bosses like the clockwork dragon and giant floating face. Opa-Opa is equipped with a distinct movement physics system featuring momentum and inertia. Throughout the stages, defeated enemies drop "Bobs" (the in-game currency), which players collect to purchase a massive arsenal of upgrades at the recurring Shop Balloons. Upgrades range from engine speed boosts and twin-bomb payloads to temporary shields and devastating laser attachments, all governed by strict time limits to maintain high-stakes strategic pacing.
