Street Fighter Alpha 2, known as Street Fighter Zero 2 (ストリートファイターZERO 2) in Japan, Asia and South America, is a 1996 fighting game originally released for the CPS II arcade hardware by Capcom. The game is both a sequel and a remake to the previous year’s Street Fighter Alpha: Warriors’ Dreams, which is itself a prequel to the Street Fighter II series in terms of plot and setting. The game featured a number of improvements over the original, such as new endings, stages, moves and gameplay systems.

Street Fighter Alpha 2

Overview & History

Released by Capcom to arcades in 1996 running on the CPS-2 hardware, Street Fighter Alpha 2 stands as a masterclass in 2D fighting game design, bridging the narrative gap between the original Street Fighter and Street Fighter II. The storyline plunges deep into the dramatic backstories of the world warriors, focusing heavily on Ryu's internal struggle with the corrupting influence of the Dark Hadou, and his fated rivalry with Akuma and Sagat. Featuring a vibrant, hand-drawn anime aesthetic that completely redefined Capcom's visual presentation, this iteration refined the sprawling character roster by introducing fan-favorites like Rolento, Gen, and Rose, alongside the debut of a mechanized Charlie Nash and a younger, brooding Ken Masters.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Mechanically, Alpha 2 revolutionized the franchise by replacing the traditional Super Combo gauge with the innovative Custom Combo system, allowing players to expend levels of their Super meter to execute freeform, custom chains of special and normal attacks. This release also introduced Alpha Counters—defensive maneuvers that let fighters instantly retaliate out of blockstun—and Custom Recoveries to avoid knockdown disadvantage. Signature character moves were deeply expanded; for instance, Ryu could hurl specialized Shakunetsu Hadokens (red fireballs), while Chun-Li utilized her multi-hit Kikouken projectile alongside her iconic spinning bird kicks. The addition of dramatic, cinematic pre-fight character dialogue and unique mid-boss encounters elevated the arcade single-player experience to unprecedented heights.
