Description

One of the defining characteristics of the Gradius series is the use of a “power meter.” The power meter is powered by a power-up item, whose purpose, when collected, is to move a highlight to the next power-up on the power meter. When a power-up that the player wants becomes highlighted, he or she may activate it, also causing the highlight to reset.

Gradius

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1985, Gradius revolutionized the side-scrolling shoot 'em up genre by introducing the legendary Vic Viper starfighter and a revolutionary power-up system. Set against the backdrop of the Bacterian Empire's relentless advance, players pilot the hyper-ion space ship on a desperate mission to save the peaceful planet Gradius. Designed by legendary game director Kazuhisa Hashimoto—who famously invented the Konami Code while debugging the game—this arcade masterpiece captivated players with its biomechanical alien aesthetics, memorable synth soundtrack, and punishing difficulty curve across seven distinct stages.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike traditional shooters featuring fixed upgrades, Gradius utilizes an iconic meter-based power-up array situated at the bottom of the screen. As players destroy red-harnessed enemy formations, they collect Power Capsule items that illuminate sequential slots on the weapon gauge: Speed Up, Missile, Double, Laser, Option, and ? (Shield). Players manually select when to activate their desired upgrade, introducing deep tactical choices. The 'Option' mechanic, which spawns up to two glowing duplicate drones that mimic the Vic Viper's exact movements and firing patterns, completely transformed genre strategy and became a staple of futuristic arcade gaming.
