Description

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition is a competitive fighting game by Capcom that was originally released for the PlayStation 2 in 2003 in Japan and in 2004 in North America and Asia. Released to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the Street Fighter series, Hyper Street Fighter II is a modified port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo in which players can control any versions of the main characters from the five Street Fighter II games previously released for the arcades. Although, originally released as a home console game, an arcade port was released shortly afterwards in limited quantities, turning it into the sixth and final arcade iteration.

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition

Overview & History

Released in 2003 by Capcom to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the legendary franchise, *Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition* serves as a nostalgic museum piece and a chaotic tournament fighter rolled into one. While there is no traditional storyline mode outside of the classic arcade ladder culminating in the tyrannical dictator M. Bison, the game's narrative legacy is rooted in celebrating the entire evolution of the *Street Fighter II* series. It compiles every major iterative arcade release—from the 1991 original up to *Super Street Fighter II Turbo*—into a single, definitive package.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The defining gimmick of *Hyper Street Fighter II* is its unprecedented character selection system. Before every match, players select not just their fighter, but which specific version of that fighter they want to play. You can pit a sluggish, heavy-hitting original *SFII* Ryu against a hyper-mobility, Super Combo-wielding *Super Turbo* Ryu. This allows for historically impossible dream-matches, such as comparing the chip-damage of classic fireballs against modern air-fireballs. The game runs on the robust CPS2 arcade hardware, retaining the crisp sprite work, iconic announcer voice lines, and legendary Yoko Shimomura soundtrack, while blending wildly different game speeds, juggle systems, and super meter mechanics across eras.
