Count Dracula sleeps for a long hundred of years. During this time, peace exists at the village and Dracula is nothing but a mere legend.

However, one day a young couple named Simon and Serena were celebrating their wedding at the village’s church.

The couple were enveloped with happiness, as the wedding bells rang, their future seemed blessed…

Suddenly, the empty sky was covered with dark clouds and with a rolling thunder that shook the earth, Dracula has once again awakened. Asking for the beautiful girl’s blood, he flew down during the middle of the wedding and suddenly took the bride with him.

Now in order to save Serena, Simon heads to the demon castle

Haunted Castle

Overview & History

Released by Konami in 1988, Haunted Castle holds the distinction of being the first arcade coin-op adaptation of the legendary Castlevania franchise. Distinct from its Famicom/NES contemporary Castlevania III, this dark fantasy beat-em-up-style platformer threw players into a grueling gothic gauntlet. Konami designed the cabinet to terrify, housing it in striking gothic-themed artwork that drew players in with promises of visceral horror. Famous for its punishing difficulty and quarter-munching design, the game tasks Simon Belmont with traversing treacherous forests, crumbling crypts, and a sprawling gothic fortress to rescue his beloved wife, Lydie, from the clutches of Count Dracula. Despite initially running on Konami's custom hardware, it later found new life through modern emulation, allowing retro enthusiasts to revisit its notoriously unforgiving corridors.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

Unlike standard side-scrolling platformers of its era, Haunted Castle emphasizes heavy, deliberate commitment to every action. Simon Belmont controls with a distinct stiffness that heightens the tension; missing a platform or mistiming a swing often results in instant death or severe health loss. Players must whip their way through swarms of bats, ghouls, and towering bosses while managing sub-weapons. Instead of the classic heart currency, sub-weapons like stopwatches, flaming boomerangs, and cross-shaped daggers are powered by collectible gems. The whip itself is fully upgradeable, evolving from a standard leather strap into a devastating spiked chain and ultimately a fiery morning star. However, taking damage often downgrades your whip, forcing players to master flawless defense. The game's atmosphere is wonderfully dripping with dread, amplified by an incredible, haunting chiptune soundtrack that remains a high point of late-80s arcade audio engineering.
