Gobble, gobble, gulp! Who’s munching Power Pellets? Who’s zipping around the maze at top speed, chomping up ghosts and scoring big points? It’s Pac-Man, the world’s hungriest character! And he’s got the munchies! Devour a fruit treat and get a big bonus score. But if you’re caught by the spooky hunters roaming the maze, you’re ghostflakes! Use the warp tunnel for a quick escape, and swallow up a Power Pellet to temporarily make Pac-Man an unstoppable eater!

Pac-Man

Overview & History

Released by Namco in Japan in May 1980, Pac-Man revolutionized the arcade industry by moving away from violent space-shooter motifs and introducing character-driven puzzle action. Designed by Toru Iwatani—partially inspired by the shape of a pizza with a missing slice—the game was originally named "Puck-Man," but was swiftly rebranded for its international release to prevent vandalism on the cabinet's marquee. As a cultural touchstone of the 1980s golden age of video games, it sparked a massive merchandising phenomenon, spawned countless sequels, and became an enduring symbol of digital entertainment history.

The minimalistic storyline casts players as the titular yellow, circular hero navigating a claustrophobic, neon-blue maze. Pac-Man’s primary objective is to consume all 240 small pellets scattered throughout the labyrinth while dodging four color-coded ghosts: Blinky (the aggressive red chaser), Pinky (the ambushing pink strategist), Inky (the fickle cyan patrolman), and Clyde (the aloof orange wanderer). Each ghost possesses a distinct artificial intelligence routine, transforming the maze from a simple eating contest into a tense psychological cat-and-mouse chase. Intermission cutscenes featuring comedic animations between Pac-Man and the ghosts provide brief respites from the mounting tension.

Gameplay Features & Mechanics

The core gameplay loop revolves around efficient route planning and quick reflex execution. Pac-Man navigates the single-screen maze at a constant speed, collecting standard dots for 10 points each. Four larger flashing items known as "Energizers" (or Power Pellets) are strategically tucked into the corners of the arena. Consuming an Energizer temporarily reverses the power dynamic, rendering the ghosts vulnerable, sluggish, and deep blue in color. During this window, Pac-Man can eat the ghosts for escalating bonus points—ranging from 200 for the first up to 1600 for the fourth—sending their disembodied eyes scuttling back to the central spawn box to regenerate. Bonus fruit items, such as cherries, strawberries, and the iconic high-scoring Key, spawn periodically beneath the ghost house to tempt players into risky detours. As players progress past the infamous "Split-Screen" kill-screen at level 256, the difficulty ramps up drastically due to relentless ghost speeds and shortened vulnerable states.
